In October 2006, The Robin Hood Foundation decided to extend their support to not only help new needy Mums but also to help the grannies who look after their orphaned grandchildren. These women are the unsung heroes of the struggle against Aids and they are amongst the poorest of the poor. The initial aim of our first "gogo bags" project was to give 75 grannies a bag filled with basic food items and some luxuires to make the Christmas season a little easier for them and their dependants. An email was sent out to 75 people requesting help for this project. This email was passed onto friends and within three weeks, we received 913 gogo bags! The first gogo bags drop took place in Inchanga and the gratitude and excitement with which the grannies received their gogo bags made us vow to continue this project.
Poor grannies are identified through community workers and church workers and it is our intention to hand out at least 2000 gogo bags every year.
From December 2006 to December 2011, we have distributed more than 21 000 gogo bags directly into the hands of the neediest poor gogos, 3 000 of which were distributed in 2011 alone! This year we're hoping to beat our previous years figures and distribute 4 000 gogo bags to our surrounding empoverished communities.
Each gogo bag usually contains the following items-
2.5 kg maize
2.5 kg sugar
100 tea bags
1 tin pilchards
1 tin baked beans
1 large bar of sunlight soap
1 family soap
1 kg packet of rice
1 box of soya
1 box of biscuits
1 tube of toothpaste |

If you would like to sponsor a gogo bag, it costs R150 to make up a bag. Either donors can make up a bag and drop it off at the Pro Appointments offices or they can make a deposit and then we place a bulk order with Jumbo Cash & Carry.
